The Two Types of Newsletters

From a monetization perspective, there's really 2 "types" of newsletters:

  1. Conversion Newsletters
  2. Sponsorship Newsletters

When you have a Sponsorship Newsletter, your newsletter is your product - and you generally monetize by selling ads and sponsorships in your newsletter.

Think: Morning Brew or The Hustle.

But when you have a Conversion Newsletter, on the other hand, what you're doing is using email to…

In other words, you're using email (or your "newsletter") to grow your business but - and this is important - your newsletter isn't your product or your business.

It's simply an asset designed to help you grow your business.
